A 'hermit' referred to only as 'Mr Woods' lived in this hut at The Springs, during the 1870's. Presumably he's one of the folks pictured. In the early 1890's my Great, great grandfather became the first Mountain Ranger, and lived in this cottage at The Springs. The Springs is around 1000' above the last of the houses at Fern Tree, and around 1300' below the pinnacle.
This is a somewhat later photo, showing Constable Gadd's cottage, with the Springs Hotel in the foreground, and a good overview of The Springs area. The hotel itself was built in 1907. In about 1937 the road was continued on to the pinnacle. The hotel was conceived as a sort of health spa. It changed hands frequently, generally ran at a loss, and often without a liquor licence.
The tennis court shown here still remains, and is the only substantial evidence that any buildings ever stood at the site. The cottage was already long gone when the hotel was burned down in the cataclysmic bushfires of 1967. The Mountain from Huon Rd, Sth Hobart.
The Fern Tree Hotel, also burned down in the 1967 fires. Fern Tree Hotel from the Pipeline track. This is a mile or so from where I used to live. A rather less substantial hotel was built on this site after 1967.
Charles Gadd's sister Frances married Frank Andrews in 1890 and ran the Fern Tree Hotel until at least 1922. Date unknown. This view of Huon Rd at Fern Tree is very reminiscent of the day I got stranded coming home with a maniacal busdriver, who figured he could drive through this sort of stuff, and ended up with the bus stuck sideways across the road. The Mountain viewed from the Cascade Rivulet, near what is now Wynyard St, South Hobart. Photo, 1918.
Silver Falls, looking rather anaemic in this photo which was sent to someone c/o - my family atThe Springs in 1906. Silver Falls is one of the numerous minor waterfalls on the Mountain. The only falls of any real stature, Wellington Falls, are a half day's walk from the nearest road. A postcard sent from Mountain River, on the south side of the Mountain. Nowadays it's a picturesque, outlying rural suburb. Back then it was apparently far enough away to send postcards from.
The Mountain from New Town, a northern suburb of Hobart. This is supposed to be 'a lake on Huon Rd', the exact location of which, I must admit, has me stumped. The reverse of the Silver Falls postcard, showing Mt Wellington stamp.
